Activity: Personalize Nursery Rhymes
Nursery rhymes carry all parts of language that lead to speaking and reading. Nursery rhymes are foundational to the language of poetry. The rhythm and rhyme in nursery rhymes speaks even to infants.
I communicated with my 8-month-old grandson, Levi, when I personalized some nursery rhymes with which he was familiar. He smiled, bobbed his head back and forth and banged his highchair tray, along with me. Eventually he will learn the words’ meanings and see that they tell a story. But before he can learn these abstracts, I must have his attention. I HAD LEVI’S FULL ATTENTION as I sang these personalized songs.
(sung to the children’s song, “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.”)
Little Levi in your seat
How I wonder all you eat
Up into your mouth it goes
Through your body goodness flows
Little Levi in your seat
How I wonder all you eat.
